The letters of James and Alix Strachey 1924-1925

Map of James’ London on front end papers. Map of Alix’s Berlin on back end papers. 22 illustrations. 2 Appendices. Glossary of German and French terms. Index. Footnotes. This collection of letters chronicles a one-year period when the Stracheys were separated while she underwent psychoanalysis in Berlin and he remained in England. In effect, the letters serve as a chronicle of the growth of their surprisingly modern marriage of equals as well as their separated but similar worlds of literature and bohemianism united by the burgeoning field of psychoanalysis. Strachey was the official translator of the English Standard Edition of Freud’s works and a leading British psychoanalyst; his wife Alix was also a psychoanalyst.
