In The Lost World neemt fotograaf Maan Limburg je mee op avontuur door de magische, verlaten plekken van Japan. Tijdens haar reizen in het land van de rijzende zon stuitte Limburg op veel verlaten huizen en gebouwen, ook wel bekend als Akiya. Ze raakte gefascineerd door deze locaties en begon ze obsessief te fotograferen. Achteraf bleek dat in Japan 13,6 procent van alle huizen verlaten is. Voor The Lost World maakte Limburg een prachtige selectie uit de duizenden beelden die ze op deze locaties schoot. Het voyeuristische beeld wordt begeleid door een introductie van Liza Dalby (auteur van de bestseller “Geisha” en “Kimono: Fashioning Culture”), persoonlijke aantekeningen en een essay over het culturele fenomeen Akiya. Het resultaat is een dystopisch maar intiem boek dat een inkijkje geeft in een wereld zonder mensen. During her travels in the land of the rising sun, Limburg came across many abandoned houses and buildings, also known as Akiya. She became fascinated with these locations and began obsessively photographing them. Afterwards it turned out that in Japan 13.6 percent of all houses are abandoned. For The Lost World, Limburg made a wonderful selection from the thousands of images she shot at these locations. The voyeuristic image is accompanied by an introduction by Liza Dalby (author of the bestseller “Geisha” and “Kimono: Fashioning Culture”), personal notes and an essay on the cultural phenomenon of Akiya. The result is a dystopian but intimate book that provides an insight into a world without people.
