In this book Doreen Greig expresses her curiosity as an architect on the ways the Dutch colonists behaved during the 17th and 18th centuries when doing the business of trading. In particular how they were sheltering themselves in many different parts of the world were they arrived as unwelcome foreigners or as rivals of trade. The author describes the architecture resulting from the expansion of the Netherlands during that period in Asia., Africa and the Americas. She also analyzes the diffusion of Dutch cultural institutions against the background of the success and failures of the Dutch India Compagnies.
