In Trial and Error (1949), Chaim Weizmann, the first president of Israel, recounts his life, his academic career, and especially his role in the Zionist movement.
The book describes his youth in the Russian Empire, his studies and work as a chemist in Switzerland and England, and his growing involvement with Zionism. Weizmann played a key role in the creation of the Balfour Declaration (1917), in which Great Britain expressed support for the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine.
Besides his political activities, Weizmann addresses the difficulties within the Zionist movement, his relationships with world leaders, and the moral and practical challenges of establishing a Jewish state. The title, Trial and Error, refers to the constant struggles, failures, and successes he experienced on the way to realizing that dream.
