Radishchev was one of the outstanding writers and thinkers of the eighteenth century Russian environs. He is acclaimed bij Communist proponents as a materialist and a predecessor of Russian Communism.

This book is an endeavor to enlarge upon these aspects of Radishchev’s life and to show that this eighteenth century Russian is not a true follower of the radical writers of the French Revolution, nor a forerunner of modern totalitarianism. It is based on the premise that Radishchev was not as radical concerning political reforms as has been implied, that he would have accepted am enlightened monarch of Peter the Great’s stature, that he would have settled for the type of government that England had after the great election reform of 1867. This was far from being a democracy as that term has been defined in the western world since World War I.
