Relic veneration in the Middle Ages.
Relics of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the saints were an essential part of medieval Christian religion. The faithful believed that such relics were imbued with divine power; they were willing to undertake arduous pilgrimages in order to be near them. The nearer the better, for life was so uncertain they wanted God close at hand. And in relics, the earthly remains of His saints, God would be closest to them.
Although these relics (bones, splinters of wood, pieces of cloth) were often unattractive in themselves, the magnificent reliquaries in which they were kept made a powerful statement. The best artists were engaged to produce reliquaries for which the costliest materials were used; no expense was spared in the commission of this sacred task. Reliquaries are sublime examples of the gold and silversmith’s art. An art which enjoyed greater prestige in the Middle Ages than painting.
Before beginning this important book, Professor Henk van Os had to travel thousands f kilometers in order to inspect medieval relics and reliquaries throughout th world. He then selected the finest, most imposing specimens which he describes in this publication from a comprehensive perspective. Through the objects, reader and viewer are introduced to the religion; through the religion they are presented with the objects. Objects which have never before been described so extensively, in such an inspiring fashion.
