Wolfe is depicted as a brilliant but chronically sickly, eccentric, and occasionally abrasive military leader. The book builds to the daring September 1759 British assault. Under Wolfe’s command, British troops secretly scaled the cliffs of the St. Lawrence River under the cover of darkness, ultimately defeating the French forces led by the Marquis de Montcalm. In a twist of fate that Hibbert explores in detail, both commanding generals Wolfe and Montcalm sustained fatal wounds during the clash. Wolfe’s victory is widely considered one of the most fateful events of the 18th century, ultimately leading to the British conquest of Canada.
