The English farm wagon origins and structures

The traditional farm wagon, once a familiar feature of the harvest scene, is now becoming as rare as the village wheelright who made it. The author traces the development of the wagon from the early Iron Age, and describes the techniques used by the wagon maker – one of the most skilled of craftsmen – in building the traditionally strong and graceful farm wagon. Farm wagons fall into many distinct groups, including box and bow, spindle-sided and panel-sided wagons; the different types evolved to meet local conditions. The twenty-eight regional designs are described and illustrated for the first time, and related to their European counterparts. The areas where they were made and used are described.
