The greater part of the Dutch electricity network consists of underground cables. This is the result of a long historical process, and, in an international perspective, this puts the Netherlands in a rather special position. This book describes the history of the power cable in The Netherlands between 1890 and 1990. It tells the story of developing cable technology and electricity networks, as well as the history of cable manufacturing in The Netherlands. Special attention is paid to KEMA, an institute that was founded to support the expanding Dutch utilities by testing power cables and accessories. Designing cables and networks is a human activity, which implies that this book does not merely describe the development of systems and organizations, but also focuses on the human factor during a century of Dutch electricity supply.
