From 1789 Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) published several novels (“Gothic Novels”) that were successful on the market, including “The Castles of Athlin”. In 1795 her travelogue from the summer of 1794 was published. Because of the language barrier, she is dependent on what she sees. However, the sections on the conquest of Mainz in 1792 and the reconquest in 1793 are very revealing and informative.
