Web aesthetics
Vito Campanelli

How digital media affect culture and society.

In a world of rapidly expanding digital networks, the domain of media theory, which studies the influence of these cultural forms, has largely neglected the implications of aesthetic philosophy. Vito Campanelli explores network forms from the point of view of aesthetics, thus providing an open invitation to transcend the inherent limitations of the current debate on digital culture.

The web is the medium that stands between the new media and society and, more than any other, stimulates the global dissemination of ideas and behavior, frames aesthetic forms and shapes contemporary culture and society.

Campanelli observes some important phenomena in the present day, such as social networks, peer-to-peer networks, the ‘remix culture’, etc., and reduces them to their historical premises; in doing so, he lays the foundations of an organic aesthetic theory of digital media.
