This is the first English language field guide to the birds of Japan to cover in text and illustrations all of the bird species known to occur in Japan. In recent years more interest has been shown in Japanese birds by both foreign visitors and Japanese residents. There has been an increase in bird observation and study not only by professional ornithologists but by a regularly expanding corps of experienced amateur birders led by the Wild Bird Society of Japan (WBSJ). The WBSJ, through the efforts of its network of members, has made national censuses of the breeding bird population, studied the migratory habits and routes of Japanese raptors, and has done semi-annual censuses of waders and annual censuses of waterfowl. Japanese bird experts have monitored threatened species like the Japanese Crested Ibis and the Short-tailed Albatross. As a result of these activities much has been learned about the breeding places, behavioral characteristics, and seasonal ranges of Japanese birds. Numerous new species have been add.

Beautiful illustrated by Shinji Takano.
