The author spend thirteen months living with the travelers in Ireland in a horse-drawn wagon. An anthropologist by training, she was able to see that what differentiated the travellers from the settled was only their social position. At the bottom of the scale, with everyone’s hand against them, they had to work out appropriate strategies of survival.
