The plains of Hungary and Roumania, when Professor Starkie travelled there alone with his fiddle in 1933, were the major homelands of the European Gypsies. Dr. Starkie is the president of the international Gypsie Lore Society and his book is an authentic account of vagabonding, playing his fiddle for a meal and living and sleeping amongst Gypsies, peasants, tramps and the colorful waifs and strays of society.

This book is especially important because these Gypsie community’s almost all disappeared after World War II.
